They aren’t always sure of common misconceptions for the age we are teaching. We are so involved with our students and curriculum that it’s easy to forget parents don’t always know what is developmentally appropriate. They want to know what their students are learning and if they are doing well. Improve CommunicationĬommunication is a critical part to building those positive relationships with parents. Students are more confident showing their families skills when they have access to the same resources at home and school. These resources make the perfect phonics activities for parents to do at home. Rather than assigning phonics homework, I fill these with phonics resources such as alphabet linking charts, questions, and prompts for reading with their child. I send home a daily communication folder and it has page protectors inside. Promote Continuity between Home and SchoolĬontinuity with home and school is key to helping students bridge their learning across environments. It also gives them ideas for other types of phonics practice they could implement throughout the month. Choice boards allow families and students to choose which activities they complete. These allow for flexibility for home routines, are easily integrated into daily life, and have differentiated choices. One of my favorite phonics activities for home involves choice boards. That is why these flexible phonics activities for parents to do at home are the perfect solution. However, it avoids overwhelming them with phonics homework or causing family stress. Giving choices to families allows them to see what students are working on and be part of the learning process. My students work hard all day so I want them to play and enjoy family time at home. Provide ChoicesĬhoices are an important part of any home activity. Phonics activities for parents to do at home help our littles bloom! 1. This leads to them reading more fluently. The more practice students have decoding, the more they start to automatically recognize words. Students need these because they help them sound out words for reading and writing! I explain to families that phonics focuses on the letter-sound correspondences. We know that phonemic awareness and phonics are the building blocks for helping our young learners read. Why do I need phonics activities for parents to do at home? Phonics can be an overwhelming thing to explain to families! Instead of phonics homework, I like to focus on these 5 types of phonics activities for parents to do at home as a part of my school to home connections. We are a team working together for their student so I want them to stay informed and included. I’m always trying to connect with my families and form those positive relationships.

Proper site selection placed the home in a location best suited to manage the farm or ranch. Site selection was aimed at providing the cabin inhabitants with both sunlight and drainage to make them better able to cope with the rigors of frontier life. The most important aspect of cabin building is the site upon which the cabin was built. Modern building methods allow this shortcut. Some log cabins were built without notches and simply nailed together, but this was not as structurally sound. Log cabins were built from logs laid horizontally and interlocked on the ends with notches (British English cog joints). Settlers often built log cabins as temporary homes to live in while constructing larger, permanent houses then they often used the log cabins as outbuildings, such as barns or chicken coops. Possibly the oldest surviving log house in the United States is the C. Few log cabins dating from the 18th century still stand, but they were often not intended as permanent dwellings. The first English settlers did not widely use log cabins, building in forms more traditional to them. The contemporaneous British settlers had no tradition of building with logs, but they quickly adopted the method. Later German and Ukrainian immigrants also used this technique. The Swedish-Finnish colonists’ quick and easy construction techniques not only remained, but spread. New Sweden only briefly existed before it became the Dutch colony of New Netherland, which later became the English colony of New York. Many of its colonists were actually Forest Finns, because Finland was part of Sweden at that time. Historians believe that the first log cabins built in North America were in the Swedish colony of Nya Sverige (New Sweden) in the Delaware River and Brandywine River valleys. In the present-day United States, settlers may have first constructed log cabins by 1638. Nails would soon be out of alignment and torn out. This is because a log cabin tends to compress slightly as it settles, over a few months or years. Log cabins are mostly constructed without the use of nails and thus derive their stability from simple stacking, with only a few dowel joints for reinforcement. Modern log cabins often feature fiberglass insulation and are sold as prefabricated kits machined in a factory, rather than hand-built in the field like ancient log cabins. Today, construction of modern log cabins as leisure homes is a fully developed industry in Finland and Sweden. Many older towns in Northern Scandinavia have been built exclusively out of log houses, which have been decorated by board paneling and wood cuttings. As no chemical reaction is involved, such as hardening of mortar, a log cabin can be erected in any weather or season. With suitable tools, a log cabin can be erected from scratch in days by a family. Log construction was especially suited to Scandinavia, where straight, tall tree trunks (pine and spruce) are readily available. The Wood Museum in Trondheim, Norway, displays fourteen different traditional profiles, but a basic form of log construction was used all over North Europe and Asia and later imported to America. It was also common to replace individual logs damaged by dry rot as necessary. Nevertheless, a medieval log cabin was considered movable property (a chattel house), as evidenced by the relocation of Espåby village in 1557: the buildings were simply disassembled, transported to a new location and reassembled. Although their origin is uncertain, the first log structures were probably being built in Northern Europe by the Bronze Age (about 3500 BC). Historically log cabin construction has its roots in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. He noted that in Pontus (modern-day northeastern Turkey), dwellings were constructed by laying logs horizontally overtop of each other and filling in the gaps with “chips and mud”. Construction with logs was described by Roman architect Vitruvius Pollio in his architectural treatise De Architectura. Gunna has flow that may be unrivaled by any other rapper. I still listen to them regularly on Youtube or playlists, they just don’t make it to my library for some reason.Īnyway, enough about that. Sometimes I just listen to so much music that some of the greatest songs fall through the cracks in terms of getting added to my music library. I don’t have any idea how this song only ended up in an article now because I’ve loved it for many months. I may need to do some research and listen to more of her music because I would not like the song nearly as much without her additions to it. The female featured on this track has a really unique voice that intrigues me with it’s sweetness, too. It’s also one of those songs I can’t help but sing along to (and dance-when no one’s watching). This is such a fun song that leaves me feeling good every time it comes on. If you love groovy alternative songs, you’ll fall in love with Monoculture. I love the groove and how it blends so perfectly with the live instrumentals throughout. Monoculture may just be the coolest band on earth! Not only is their music awesome, but they actually let us use this song as the intro/outro music for our new podcast “Talking Nonsense’. You know me, I’m a sap for the love songs. It’s a nice song to use to wind down after work and the lyrics are very endearing and sweet. I enjoy the soft female vocals and laid back beat. Out of all the songs I discovered this month, this is my favorite. Another thing I really like about it is the subtle grooviness without it being overpowering. I liked Blood Orange before, but I LOVE how his voice works with Tei Shi’s to create this gentle, wispy sound quality. Blood Orange)” by Tei Shiīlood Orange’s feature is actually what made me fall so in love with this song. The sound is definitely darker and more melancholy, but somehow the vibes stay good. It’s not as upbeat or bright as the other alternative songs I’ve featured, while it does still have the live band elements to it. This is another great alternative song I found last month. It’s nothing special, lyrically, I’ll admit, but it’s catchy and easy to listen to so I keep finding myself coming back to it. Overall this is a very chill, laid back song with good vibes. It’s not overly clean and perfect like most new releases and I like that. The song also has this early 2000s boy band (in a good way), quality to it that brings up nostalgia. I had never heard of Gallant before I came across this song, but I find his voice to be very soothing and smooth to listen to. You knew there would be some R&B/soul on this list eventually and I did not disappoint. What more can I say? It’s got all the best elements of the alternative genre of music. If you like alternative music, this is probably a song you’ll enjoy quite a bit! It’s got a psychedelic, far away sound to it, while at the same time having the grounding sensations of a real, live band. There’s something very unique about this song-it’s almost like a completely new genre that the artists created themselves. If that sounds like an interesting combination of musical styles, that’s because it is. This is a very techno, upbeat dance song with rock undertones. Nevertheless, I still found some great new songs that I hope you’ll love and enjoy as much as I did and do. We're eager to hear more. Thanks for coming back to read another music article! I feel like this month I didn’t listen to nearly as much music as usual because things were hectic. The album was co-produced by Sylo alongside frequent collaborator Goldchain, and Juno Award-winning producer Lantz (aka Juno-winner Jazz Cartier).
